James started his football officiating in 1999 in Montana. While working as a High School official he was selected for multiple conference and HHSAA post season assignments. In 2008 he was selected to work in the Community College Football Officials Association (CCFOA) in Northern California.
James is a Deep official Side Judge for the CCFOA and was assigned two Bulldog Bowls, the Living Breath Foundation Bowl, and the American Bowl Division Championship.
In 2016 James was assigned to Hawaii’s Paradise Classic High School All-Star Game as the Replay Official. This was likely the first use of instant replay in a high school football game in the country.
His wife Dani still allows James to play on weekends. His son Andrew assisted in the replay booth for the 2016 Paradise Classic.
